MATTAINAI

Tokyo, 2025

Mattainai is a collection of 35 unique incense holders made from dozens of different wood species — both local and exotic hardwoods. Each piece is composed and assembled by hand, transforming discarded fragments into ritual objects.
The wood was sourced from offcuts found in small workshops across Tokyo. This project is a modest initiative to reconsider waste as a primary material. The idea emerged from a recurring frustration: witnessing beautiful offcuts left behind in woodshops around the world. Producing this collection in Japan felt meaningful, where material and craft hold a deep cultural and emotional resonance.

The collection is retailed at Cibone Omotesando, Tokyo.
